Timeline:

October 11, 2015: I decide to make an epic, red, white & blue quintuple Irish Chain for one of my close quilting friends as a surprise, inspired by an antique quilt I saw in a museum. I do the quilty math, hit the civil war reproduction fabric rack at the local quilt shop and start cutting strips.

December 27, 2015: The background blocks are complete! Next to make the chain blocks.

May 5, 2018: I am so unsure about the quilt that I never work on it. I’m unsure about the pattern and also if she’d really want a King size quilt which is what I have planned. finally give up and confess to my friend about the quilt and show it to her. We agree to make it smaller and eliminate the red so it is only white/taupe and blue. She helps me unpick some of the strip sets so we can re-assemble with all blue ones.

July 1, 2018: Now that all the many, many parts and pieces are sorted out, I begin assembling the checkerboard blocks that will be the chains.

July 6, 2018: The blocks are getting bigger!

July 7, 2018: one final push and the top is finished!

July 9, 2018: The quilt is pinned!

July 13, 2018: The quilt is only partially quilted, but we are brainstorming ideas for the background blocks and decide to try a “big stitch” boat anchor with perle cotton.

July 20, 2018: Quilting is finished!

July 26, 2018: Binding is machined on front and is in the process of being hand-sewn on the back. The chambray is a fairly loose weave and wiggly, I will get a tighter weave if I use chambray again.

April 23, 2019: It took a couple of tries to get the hang of the boat anchor big stitch quilting, but I eventually got it sorted and am almost done with the anchors!

May 3, 2019: Woo hoo!!! I wove in the ends while I was doing the embroidery and just like that, the Blue Quintuple Irish Chain Quilt is finished!
